Sam Green & Yo La Tengo
Oscar-nominated director, Sam Green (The Weather Underground), provides classic cinema lovers with a multimedia twist in his new documentary The Love Song of R. Buckminster Fuller. The film, a recount of R. Buckminster Fuller’s life, is an experiment in authentically reflecting the great American architect, systems theorist, author, designer, inventor and futurist through an artful lens. The production reveals a man who made a commitment to “the search for the principles governing the universe that helped advance the evolution of mankind”. In this real-time cinematic experience, director Green cues clips and images from his subject’s life while indie-rock pioneers Yo La Tengo perform an original score for the film. The elements of live music and live film directing in real time and real space gives the audience an amplified experience that effectively illustrates the grandeur of Fuller’s accomplishments.
Rebecca Solnit, a journalist from San Francisco where Green resides, describes the film as “a movie being born as you see it and hear it; as alive as music.” Just like seeing a shooting star over a lunar eclipse, viewing The Love Song of R. Buckminster Fuller has the audience witnessing two wonders in a single gaze.
