If there’s one thing Bollywood does that is the envy of entertainment divisions across the globe, it’s dance numbers. Say what you will about song and dance sequences in film: The second a tanpura gets plucked, you know all eyes are glued to the screen as choreographed chaos explodes in a flurry of colors and the glimmer of various jangling metal adornments.
Now, imagine all that just a few feet away on stage. That’s Rhythm India: Bollywood & Beyond, a journey of dance and celebration created by director and choreographer Joya Kazi, a World Choreography Awards nominee Telly Awards winner. After bursting on the scene at age 16 as an actor and dancer, Mumbai-born, California-raised Kazi has earned numerous recognitions, including a spot on DissDash’s list of “Coolest South Asians” and a prominent spot on the Los Angeles County Artesia Library mural, among others.
Her dance company, Joya Kazi Unlimited, features highly trained dancers and performers who bring an awe-inducing versatility informed by an extensive variety of Indian dance styles such as Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Bollywood and Bhangra, as well as fusion and contemporary dance styles. Kazi formed the company in the Bay Area in 2004 and expanded out to Los Angeles in 2012.
Fans of Mindy Kaling’s “Never Have I Ever” on Netflix will remember the groundbreaking and incredible 30 seconds of choreography that helped illustrate a celebration of Ganesh Puja, the Hindu elephant god and remover of obstacles. This was thanks to Kazi, who spent well over a month developing the movements and mudras (hand gestures), as well as the authentic Indian formalwear that went beyond the sari and featured lehengas and cholis – clothing better suited for dancing.
Because of this almost obsessive desire to put Indian culture into the American spotlight, Kazi’s work is respectful of its culture and origins, and modern and accessible enough to attract new fans. So as Bollywood & Beyond treks through royal palaces and sacred temples, echoing the lovelorn laments of lovers across time, pay extra careful attention to the fine details of the ghungroo dancing bells as you’re whisked into the frenzy.
