Bonnie & Friends
Is there a better way to ring in the New Year and celebrate than with some rocking bands? Well, there is a slightly better way and that’s if you wait a whole 30 days into the New Year and round up some of the best talent in the tri-county area to cause an aural racket at the venerable Respectable Street Café, now entering its 29th year of operation. While some might think that waiting 30 days to have a New Year’s themed show is either some cutesy ploy or a scheduling cock-up, it stands to reason that there are some deliberate intentions behind the move.
Think about it, it’s a really a one-two punch that puts the fans and the local scene at the forefront, where they belong. In one hand, you’ve already let the hoopla surrounding actual New Year’s Eve performances with “national” acts settle down and have had a whole 30-day respite to fully appreciate that you’re in 2016. In the other hand, you’ve now sobered up enough to see that onstage, like they will be for the rest of the year, are your favorite local bands.
That’s pretty cool. Leading the charge are Lake Worth’s Bonnie Riot who debuted their album Backbone at the beginning of last year to local acclaim and have gone from garage punk rockers to a Latin-flavored danceable outfit that has managed to retain the energy and brashness of their former selves. Joining them will be the Cretaceous-bent rumpus of Gallimimus, cycling punkers Party Flag, the roots rock of Shotgun Betty, the dynamic duo of the Deaf Poets and the “dumpster circus” cacophony of Que Lastima among others.
Maybe 30 days is too long of a wait, maybe it isn’t. In any case and regardless of the wait, RSC shows its staying power with this showcase of local talent that has been a key part of their winning formula over the years. Bonnie Riot, Party Flag, Que Lastima, Killmama, SADA, Gallimimus, Shotgun Betty, Deaf Poets January 30 at Respectable Street. Show starts at 8:30pm with both stages rocking. This is an 18+ gig and at a $10 cover, quite the steal. Call 561-832-9999 or visit sub-culture.org/respectable-street for more info. RSVP on FB
