Indie rock legends Neutral Milk Hotel triggered a collective jaw-drop with the April 2013 announcement of a reunion tour in late 2013/early 2014. In the 15-year gap since their last shows, lore surrounding the band has reached near-mythic proportions, earning them an ever-growing cult following and making the possibility of a reunion tour an indie rock fantasy. Only a truly impressive return to the stage could have met the soaring expectations, and that’s exactly what the band has delivered on tour, performing music from their seminal studio albums to throngs of awestruck fans around the globe.

Athens, Georgia-based Neutral Milk Hotel began in the early ’90s as the solo project of singer-songwriter Jeff Mangum, previously of Olivia Tremor Control. Following a few singles and an EP, Mangum made his full-length debut with 1996’s On Avery Island, putting together a band for a tour supporting the album. The lineup would stick, resulting in the now-legendary group of musicians on 1998’s In The Aeroplane Over the Sea, a modern classic of indie rock. The success of the album and the stresses of life on the road ultimately took its toll on Mangum, leading to the band’s indefinite hiatus at the end of that year. While Mangum has performed solo since then, the band’s 2013/14 reunion tour marked their first live shows together in 15 years.
